In 1946, a 14-pound core of plutonium going supercritical released over 1000 rad of neutron radiation in less than half a second. This is nearly twice the lethal dose, and more ionizing radiation than a nuclear blast. Those who where exposed had only days left to live. This was known as the Demon Core Incident.
